Freelance jobs like writing, editing, or social media managing are among the best online jobs for stay at home moms. If you’re a new freelancer, it’s easy to get discouraged by the competition.

As you look around online, you’ll likely see that there are lots of other people already offering the same service as you.

What’s a newbie to do? It’s easy to get overwhelmed and instantly start comparing yourself with others, but this is no time to give in to negative thoughts and fears.

Instead, keep your chin up, because there is plenty of work to go around! The Internet is a big place and as a virtual freelancer, you have the ability to reach organizations, businesses, and individuals around the globe. Think about that scope!

For example, if you want to be a freelance writer, you should be able to find business easily and quickly. Just about every website you see online needs a writer to create content for them. Know of a business that doesn’t have a website? They definitely need someone to create content for them.

You don’t need years of experience or a long, distinguished resume to land good-paying work, but you do need to know how to stand out from the crowd.

If you want to distinguish yourself from the pack, follow some of these ideas as you get started.

Create a Website

This is something I’m going to talk more about in a later post, but it’s so important to have your own website as a freelancer. A website immediately sends a message that you’re a professional and you’re serious about your work.

Think about all the times you’ve needed to hire someone to perform a service for you – maybe you needed a plumber to fix a leak or a carpenter to build a deck. After searching online you find two listings – one who has a clean, polished website complete with photos and customer testimonials, and another who has only a shoddy-looking home page or, worse yet, nothing at all.

Of the two, who do you think you would hire?

It’s the same in the freelancing world. No matter what you’ll be doing online, jobs for stay at home moms need a web presence just like brick-and-mortar businesses do.

Create a website for your work, add good samples and some testimonials and you’ll immediately have a leg up on your competition who may be bidding for the same jobs but don’t have an online presence.

Identify Your Niche

If you’re a freelancer who offers a specific service, be clear about what you’re offering.

If you’re a photographer, maybe you specialize in wedding photography or family pics. If you are a freelance writer, perhaps you like to write about food, or travel.

Don’t try to be everything for everyone. Hone your craft and specialize your skillset and you’ll be more appealing to clients in your particular niche.

Remember your USP

USP stands for “Unique Selling Point.” It’s the thing you have that no one else in your business does. Do you know what your USP as a freelancer is?

It’s YOU.

As a freelancer, the quality of your work, your professional conduct, your website, and the brand you’ve created for yourself all work together to define you.

There is no other freelancer out there who can offer exactly what you have. When you’re pitching to new clients, you have to convince them of your USP. In other words, what can you offer that no one else can?

Offer a Prompt Response Time

I’ve been a freelance writer for nine years, and in that time I’ve collaborated with other freelancers for projects or special assignments. It still boggles my mind how many freelancers don’t offer a prompt response to an email or inquiry.

If potential clients contact you, don’t wait days before writing back. You must treat your freelancing business as you would any other job. This means responding to emails quickly and getting back to clients with your proposal or other business in a timely manner.

Showcase Your Skills

As a freelancer, you need to make it clear to the client why he or she should hire you.

This means that although it may be uncomfortable, you need to set aside your modesty and toot your own horn. Convince the client that you are better than all the other guys.

If you have any special skills or have worked on a big project for a big client in the past, don’t neglect to share these assets as you bid on a project.

Be Professional

Every interaction you have with a client needs to be polished and professional. This means you respond to emails in a timely manner, you always offer your best work, and you refrain from inappropriate or silly quotes in your email signature line.

Speaking of email, your email address should be professional too. If you’re still responding to “sk8rchick87@hotmail,” it’s time to rethink your approach.

As a freelancer, it always works best to have your name (or as close as you can get) in your email. Gmail is a very user-friendly platform, and I think that it’s a good choice for a professional-sounding email address.

Adhere to Deadlines

It might seem like a no-brainer, but believe it or not, this is another big one that will instantly set you apart. So many freelancers fail to turn in work on time, or they ask for extension after extension at the last minute. This isn’t your high school history paper, it’s your livelihood.

Turn in work on time (or early!) and you’ll stand out as a freelancer who can be trusted.

Be Accommodating

While you’ll want to be organized and responsible, there’s no guarantee that the clients you work with will behave the same way. That’s why sometimes you may get rush orders or last-minute requests that seem overwhelming.

As long as these aren’t completely impossible for you to complete, my advice is that you take them as often as you can.

Offering such accommodations is inconvenient, but if you’re willing to turn around work fast and do a good job, clients will remember. You have a good chance of scoring repeat work if you go out of your way to help whenever possible.

Consider Your Online Presence

In this day and age, this is something that all job candidates should keep in mind, but it’s especially important as a freelancer.

When you’re pitching for a client or putting in a bid, don’t discount the idea that the client may Google your name just to find out who you are.

What will they see after they hit the Enter key? If you have questionable or controversial content on your social media pages, get rid of it.

Take your actions a step further and make sure you have a professional-looking photo as your profile. I always prefer to keep my accounts private for further security, but that choice is up to you. Just give a thought to the image you’re presenting to potential clients.
